Cybersquatters are domain name thieves and racketeers who used domain name registrations to unfairly and often illegally attempt to capture an ownership of trade names. While a ''URL'' or domain name is actually meant to only be operable as a network address, but not as a trade name, it is now clear that the very best network addresses are those which are equivalent or similar to a valuable trade name. Because the rules for establishing our rights in a trade name are quite different from rules establishing ownership of a domain name, great potential for conflict exists – and does in fact come into play everyday. Cybersquatters attempt to gain ownership and/or possession of a trade name via a domain name registration for a mere few dollars (sometimes free). Thereafter, these same Cybersquatters hold the name against the interests of any legitimate trade name owner - sometimes demanding exorbitant fees for transfer of the domain name registration.
